Life Support - Kogan Energy

Life Support Equipment and Sensitive Load

What is Life Support equipment?

Life support equipment is equipment that is necessary to ensure the ongoing health and safety of people with certain medical conditions. Generally, life support equipment requires a continuous supply of electricity, which means your electricity retailer must be made aware of any life support equipment on your property.

If you or someone at your home requires continuous electricity supply for the use of life support equipment, please download and complete the appropriate form for your state from the selection below.

What is Sensitive Load?

Sensitive load is a requirement for the supply of electricity for medical purposes which do not fall within the registration requirements of life support equipment. For example, properties that house the elderly, continuous positive airway pressure devices (in Victoria), and surgeries, may be considered to have sensitive loads.

A property with a sensitive load does not receive the priority given to properties with life support equipment. Importantly, a property with sensitive load may not be recognised by your distributor and can be disconnected by us or your distributor.

Your Rights and Safety

Your rights

If you correctly register your property as a property with life support equipment, which includes notifying Kogan Energy and returning the applicable life support registration forms:

  • your property will not be disconnected under any circumstances (unless you request disconnection);
  • your property will be flagged with your local distributor to ensure that:
    • you are informed of any planned outages in advance, so that you can make arrangements to secure continued electricity supply during this period; and
    • in the event an unplanned electricity outage occurs, your distributor is aware that you require the prompt reconnection of electricity and can make arrangements with you to ensure your electricity is reconnected as soon as possible.

Please note that if you do not return a completed copy of your life support registration form to us, we may remove the life support flag from your account. This means your distributor will not have your property marked as requiring life support, and you will not be entitled to the above rights.

Safety

Even if you have correctly registered your property as requiring life support, it is important that you are prepared for unexpected electricity outages. There are a few simple things you can do to ensure you are prepared:

  1. Regularly check the back-up battery of your life support equipment to ensure it is fully charged.
  2. Make sure you have important and up-to-date information on hand such as your doctor’s name and contact details, friends and family contact details, the location of the nearest hospital, and the name and contact details of your emergency contact person(s).
  3. Have a clear plan of what you would do if you lost electricity for an extended period.
